  • Land & Legacy - Lessons from a Bloodtrail

    13/08/2019 Duración: 38min

Would a fixed blade broadhead perform better on a shoulder impact than a expandable? We learn from an experienced blood trailing what his experiences have shown. Hindsight is 20/20 when it comes to taking the shot on a whitetail deer. We sometimes realize we should have waited or you should have taken the shot at a different range. We can learn a lot of lessons from our mistakes on shot placement. This week we sit down and talk with Kasey Morgan of Drury Outdoors who owned a blood tracking company for almost a decade operating out of Wisconsin and Ohio. During those years he learned a lot of things with shot placement on deer. You ask a hunter the question fixed blade or expandable, you'll get the same debate as Ford or Chevy. If we're honest with ourselves we know one performs better than another depending on the shot placement. We should all look for the perfect shot and make a quick ethical kill, but mistakes happen. Kasey discusses what angles he would avoid and what areas of the deer to avoid hitting. W

  • Land & Legacy - Advanced Fall Food Plots

    13/08/2019 Duración: 49min

During this podcast, we continue the discussion on fall food plotting. Last week we covered the specific fall food blends we would be planting offered by Stratton Seed Company. To say the least, we are excited to get these blends in the ground, however, it is not a random selection of forages, but a strategic plan to optimize our success this fall with a bow. This week we dive deeper into the strategy behind how we continually plant successful fall food plots. We review the step by step cost-saving food plot planting techniques that we use each fall. Step 1 includes terminating the crop. Step 2 broadcast the seed. Step 3 involves rolling over the vegetation on top of the seed by several different means. If this food plot planting technique sounds simple, that is because it is, but we cover this topic in-depth to make sure everyone can comfortably plant a successful food plot this fall. Another large part of the podcast is devoted to different planting strategies that help make large plots hunt small. If you

  • The Huntavore - Cast Iron Cooking

    12/08/2019 Duración: 44min

I sit down with Steve Brewer of @castironsteve, where he shows off a nice collection of cast iron cooking vessels. We talk basics of cast iron care, bringing a relic back to life, and how cast iron is still the best in 2019. Show Notes Cast Iron cookware is a bombproof cooling medium that holds heat incredibly well for searing, yet distributes heat evenly to prevent scorching. It can bake, sear, braise, and boil making it super utilitarian. Cast Iron is porous which is here seasoning comes into play, by filling the pores with a seasoning fat or oil. Basic Seasoning: 450 degree oven, place cast in for an hour. On hot cast, wipe on oil, lard, or seasoning product. Place back into the oven to let the seasoning bake on. Repeat 3-4 times. This is a long process, that pays off in the long run. Maintain Seasoning: after scrubbing or rinsing cast iron, place back on heat and add a thin layer of oil and let it cool. Wipe away remaining oil, leaving a dry, not sticky iron. Steve’s procedure for cooking a steak is:

  • DIY Sportsman - Hunting Strategy with Ricky Kohler

    08/08/2019 Duración: 01h03min

Ricky isn't a well known guy on the hunting scene, but that's mostly because he likes to fly under the radar. He has a ton of hunting experience on both public and private and has a man cave full of mature bucks to show for it. Part of his strategy is to target multiple states and have a multi-year plan in place. This allows him to increase opportunity while not spreading himself too thin. The primary states he focuses on are Minnesota, which he can hunt every year, North Dakota and Iowa. Each of those states has a very different range of habitat types and hunter pressure. Ricky tries to get on a good buck in Minnesota as early as possible so he can focus valuable rut time for one of his other states. Ricky is very calculated in his methods and strategies, but also has an open enough mind to work with whatever situation is presented. He hunts out of a tree stand, saddle, or on the ground. One of his detailed North Dakota hunts takes place in a tree in below zero temperatures. The next has him in a ghillie su
