We’re heading up to “O Canada.” I love to go north of the border, I’ve had some great hunts up there and with some great people. And Chris is no exception, he runs Cedar Ridge Outdoors and he’s just kind of sort of getting going in this whole program, and so he and I connected on social media and we’ll be talking Deer Hunting and Discover Cedar Ridge Outdoors. Josh Honeycutt is a back-country deer hunter from Kentucky that grew up slinging arrows and bullets at pressured river bottom whitetails. If it’s deer or turkey season, you’ll find him high in an oak tree or sitting up against one. And he enjoys spending that time in the outdoors with his wife, Kathryn, as well as the rest of his family and friends. Josh has hunted the prairie whitetails of Kansas to the river bottom bucks of Kentucky to the pine-dwelling deer of South Carolina. Simply put, he loves to hunt deer. Eli Gesell is from North Central Minnesota and he is one heck of a swamp buck hunter, and he’ll talk about those stories coming up. So, Eli, welcome back to the show and let’s just start right where you want to start the show off with Whitetail Underground. Let’s talk about how it began, what it offers, and why people should take a look at it. Well, it began as me not wanting to ever look back and say, “I wish I would have tried to turn something that I’m passionate into a career.” There’s a couple of things in my life that I kind of look back and say, “What if?,” and, “Why didn’t you try?” And I didn’t want this to be one of those things. In 2015 I almost died of carbon monoxide poisoning and that’s kind of what really fueled the drive to want to try and make this work. And the na

, we manage things a little bit different than…I shouldn’t say everybody, because there’s other people that do it the same as we do. For us we have private land, so we can manage things the way we want as we own it. We look for four-and-a-half-plus-year-old bucks. You know, if we have a 140, 150-inch three-year-old, usually that deer gets a free pass. And if we have a 130-inch five-year-old, that deer is going to get shot before that bigger antler buck because that bigger antler buck has potential. There’s also, you know, you flip the dice. Because something could happen, EHD, CWD, hit by a car, predators, there’s a lot of different things that can happen to that. So, you know, you roll the dice and hope for the best. But when we, you know, try to manage our deer herds, we shoot X amount of does, and then usually try to shoot that, you know, four-and-a-half-year-old or older. Now, if I have special needs hunters or I have youth hunters, then that’s a whole different ball g

Well, I just want to start by saying it’s always a pleasure to speak from an area of doing it. A lot of people, you know, they discuss things and it’s kind of, “Well, I read this in a book and I heard somebody say this.” But hunting has been a passion of mine, grew up doing it. I started early in life, I guess 11 or 12 Dad took me squirrel hunting. And all of this was done on our own family farm, third-generation Black Angus farmer from Newbern, Alabama. So in the South mostly the areas that we have a lot of people do catfish farming, cattle, and, you know, just your… Some row-crop farming goes on further south Alabama and some other places. But got into hunting early and I developed that outdoors passion, I guess, from my dad. Growing up on farm, you got early Saturdays. Even if you come home from the school, if the hay needed to be hauled out to field, I guess you had to get your homework quick, and then we went down to the farm. Deer Hunting with Be a Lion Outdoors – CJ James – I’m with Christopher James, also known, a.k.a., as CJ. And he’s a writer and author, DIY hunter, an extreme wilderness fanatic, a fitness person, and he’s an overcomer.
