Star Trek: Phase II. As Star Trek fans in 2014, we have many wonderful independent series to enjoy. But it wasn't always that way. Back in April 2003, Jack Marshall and James Cawley created Star Trek New Voyages and were the first to bring Kirk, Spock, and the missions of the Enterprise 1701 back to the screen. In February 2008, they redubbed the series Star Trek: Phase II, the title of the planned but never produced television series from the late 1970s. Since its inception as New Voyages in 2003, Phase II has produced nine episodes—"Come What May," "In Harm's Way," "To Serve All My Days," "World Enough and Time," "Blood and Fire" (a two-parter), "Enemy: Starfleet," "The Child," and "Kitumba"—along with three vignettes—"Center Seat," "No-Win Scenario," and "Going Boldly." Some familiar faces have also appeared in guest roles in these episodes, including Walter Koenig, George Takei, Barbara Luna, and David Gerrold. But the best is yet to come. The Continuing Mission: Cathedral In the Void. When it comes to fan series, most people think of television. But not everyone takes this approach to storytelling. Audio dramas are another popular way that fans continue the missions of Starfleet. And without visuals to fall back on, bringing Star Trek to life through sound alone can be challenging. One group that is doing it well is Star Trek: The Continuing Mission, a series that follows the adventures of the USS Montana. After a three-year hiatus, Star Trek: The Continuing Mission released their eighth episode, "Cathedral in the Void," an HP Lovecraft-inspired story that finds unspeakable creations in the farthest reaches of the final frontier. Tommy Kraft and Marc Bowers talk Star Trek: Horizon. We know a great deal about the 23rd and 24th centuries, but our exploration of the 22nd was unfortunately cut short. The cancellation of Enterprise not only left behind a number of loose threads from the series, but also key moments in Star Trek history that a prequel should have explored. Almost ten years after Enterprise left television, the feature-length film Star Trek: Horizon aims to close one of those gaps by telling the story of the famous Earth-Romulan War. Made by fans in love with Star Trek and set during the Enterprise time period, Horizon centers on The Coalition of Planets, a young alliance of worlds led by Earth, that is at war with the Romulan Empire. Desperate for a chance to gain the upper hand, the Coalition forms an alliance with T’mar, a Romulan deserter, in the hopes that she can provide valuable intelligence on her former masters. Tim Russ talks Star Trek: Renegades. One of the interesting things about the post-TNG stories set in the Alpha Quadrant was that a lot of pressure was being put on the Federation as a result of threats from the Borg and the Dominion. Section 31 was very active, and even leaders who you would expect to uphold Gene Roddenberry's utopian ideals were taking measures that undermined the very foundation of the Federation. A progression of this storyline can be found in Star Trek: Renegades, an independent production directed by Tim Russ that stars many familiar faces from the Star Trek franchise, including Walter Koenig, Gary Graham, Robert Picardo, Richard Herd, Manu Intiraymi, and of course Tim Russ as Tuvok. Ten years after Voyager's return from the Delta Quadrant, the Federation is again in crisis and its very survival is in question. Star Trek Equinox. Throughout Star Trek there are those episodes that you feel ended with closure and those that left you asking "and then what happened"? Generally the two don't cross. But a new film in pre-production called Star Trek: Equinox: The Night of Time combines one of most memorable moments from The Original Series with a very specific loose thread from Star Trek: Voyager. The cast includes some names very familiar to Star Trek fans including Gary Lockwood, who will be reprising his role as Gary Mitchell, best friend of James T. Kirk, from the classic TOS episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” and John Savage, who returns as Captain Rudy Ransom from the Voyager two-parter "Equinox." Manu Intiraymi on Icheb and Renegades. Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future was one of utopian ideals, but over time the stories stretched the boundaries of that idealism and introduced more conflict into a world where everyone seemed to get along. Threats like the Dominion and the Borg challenged our heroes, and often in surprising ways. Voyager grappled with the idea the that not all Borg are bad—or at least deserve a second chance—while DS9 exposed the shadowy world of Section 31.
