What constitutes a family seems to be ever changing in the United States of America and around the world. The word family conjures and image of a man married to a woman with children together. That image is still typical. But you also have the divorced man and divorced woman with children from previous marriages. You know the Brady Bunch type that became the new normal in the 70’s. Then there was the proliferation of single parent families and now same-sex parent families have become the new normal. What are your thoughts on the new normal same-sex parent families? The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held an annual convention at the end of July, 2011.  They addressed a number of issues that face African-Americans, in particular, the vicious cycle of crime and unemployment that plagues black men and youths.  They cite the loss of manufacturing jobs, shrinking government jobs and the recession as major contributors, but the primary factor cited was the low level of education or rather, the lack thereof.  Is pushing for higher standards in urban schools where the majority of the students are minorities really the key to breaking the vicious cycle of violence and prison?  Will pushing our youth to strive for educational excellence keep them from becoming fodder for the criminal justice system or should we be looking beneath the surface of inferior education?  Join us as we search the scriptures for answers to these questions and more. The African American community has always boasted of a strong spiritual foundation born from the days of slavery onward. The Church was also seen as spiritual oasis during the turbulent times of the civil rights movement when it fulfilled the role of school, community meeting place, news center, and political headquarters. For many blacks, attending Church was never a matter of choice but of obligation.
