Why is that? Are blacks more successful in sports because of slavery or are there deeper questions that we should ask? Same-sex marriage is a phrase that conjures quite a bit of contention.  The contentions are subject to arise in any organization whether it is a family, workplace, the military or church.  The Episcopal Church it seems has sided with same-sex marriage by allowing the marriage of two of their lesbian clergy members.  Of course, this marriage has brought on contention.  But why does the contention occur?  Is there really something wrong with same-sex marriage?  If there were something wrong with same-sex marriage don’t you think members of the clergy would know that? Few historians will deny that the system of institutionalized slavery was the primary factor that transformed America into an economic powerhouse and solidified its position as the most powerful nation on Earth. While slavery was clearly a blessing for the financial growth of the country, few would be so callous or so foolish as to suggest that slavery was a blessing for the millions of Blacks who were enslaved. But that is exactly what one Arkansas State Representative is proposing. In his book written in 2009 Republican Jon Hubbard states that slavery was a “Blessing in Disguise” for the Black Race. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held an annual convention at the end of July, 2011.  They addressed a number of issues that face African-Americans, in particular, the vicious cycle of crime and unemployment that plagues black men and youths.  They cite the loss of manufacturing jobs, shrinking government jobs and the recession as major contributors, but the primary factor cited was the low level of education or rather, the lack thereof.  Is pushing for higher standards in urban schools where the majority of the students are minorities really the key to breaking the vicious cycle of violence and prison?  Will pushing our youth to strive for educational excellence keep them from becoming fodder for the criminal justice system or should we be looking beneath the surface of inferior education?  Join us as we search the scriptures for answers to these questions and more.
