In this 1906 short story by Texas author Andy Adams a young eastern college bound man is offered a trip out west to Texas to check up on his father's investment of property outside of San Antonio. His trip, taken primarily to restore his health, turns out to be to his great liking and he finds ways to extend it for a few years, becoming throuroughly western in the process.  Adams spent most of his adult life working with cattle and at age 43 became a very good writer of western life.   

While riding his bicycle in the Miskatonic Valley of rural New England, a geneologist seeks shelter from an approaching storm. He enters an apparently abandoned house only to find it occupied by a loathsome old man who seems to enjoy pictures of hacked human bodies. In "the Steadfast Tin Soldier" from Hans Christian Anderson whcih has been adapted into ballet and theater, a boy receives a set of 25 tin soldiers, all cast from an old tin spoon, and lines them up on a tabletop. One soldier stands on a single leg, nevefr faltering, and falls in love with a paper ballerina. A series of events overtake the tin soldier before he can realize his dream, leaving us to wonder if fate controls our lives regardless of our actions, or if we must rise above our limitations and take control of our lives. In "The Little Girl Who Dared" by Henry Lanier you'll hear the story of the disastrous plight of the Donner Party, when a large group of emigrants traveling to California were trapped in the Sierra Mountains for months as a result of early snows. The courage of a small girl in bringing aid to her father, who had been turned out of the party, turned out to be a critical factor in the survival of half the group, in this true pioneer story. Here, because of harmful radiation, they are born they age, and die after 8 days They have the advantage of having inherited their intelligence from past generations, so even in his first day of life the boy can think intelligently- and he soon comes up with a way he believes will save their cave- dwelling people and the girl he has fallen in love with.

A Little Journey is a great example of Ray Bradbury's writing! It is storytelling at its best, it makes you smile, and its science fiction that can be enjoyed by all.
