1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales

Today I have a real treat for you , actually two treats, one by sharing our first dystopian short story with you, and two by having the writer of this story performing the narration for it. She’s our own Australian original, Erica Tippet, and she has become a pretty good short story writer since her last visit here when she read a Henry Lawson story for us last year. Dystopian stories are a sort of science fiction, in that they describe society in the future or near future, and the outlook tends to be fairly grim. Not many people would argue with you if you said the big government has gone way to far in controlling our lives. Erica’s story THE TEST describes the plight of a young girl who lives in a totalitarian society which, in an obvious effort to control the population, forces young ladies to pass a test in order that they can be granted fertility. A Retrieved Reformation- a professional safecracker gets out of prison and soon finds a small town that he likes. He decides to live a straight life and marries the bankers daughter, putting the old business behind him forever. But he is faced with a challenge when a young family member is accidentally locked in the banks new safe and the mother begins to panic. This classic short story by Washington Irving is a well-written tale of life in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town in New York State in an area bordering the Hudson River , where many Dutch and German immigrants settled after Henry Hudson's explorations. Along with a desire to work hard and prosper, the Dutch brought with them their superstitions..and the deep woods and wild things in that country provided a great setting for stories. In this story, a tall, gangly schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane battles with a favorite local hero for the affections of a wealthy Dutch maid. Irving is a master of the English language and uses rich, descriptive words and phrases in his story, providing a great way for the listener to brush up on the better side of the English language.
