On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, Dan chats with his North Dakota bowhunting brother Lucas Cayko about his successful 2018 hunting season. Dan and Lucas dive in to two specific hunts where he was able to harvest two different mature whitetails, one with a gun and one with a bow. But first, Lucas walks us through how his summer scouting led him to finding a deer heard that was isolated in a willow grove. In this isolated group there were several bucks that he considered to be shooters. But, there was one deer that caught his attention and he decided to dedicate his entire season to this giant buck. Little did he know, the deer gods had different plans. Lucas is the kind of guy who seems to get it done every single year while hunting public land. Being creative in his approach to hunting mature bucks, he is able to use his surroundings to make the best strategic decisions. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles Podcast, Dan talks with returning guest Mike Perry about his recent Ohio success on a 8 1/2 old buck. The guys discuss the area that this buck called how all the way down to the specific tree stand he shot him out of. Mike explain how in 2012 EHD hit this specific piece of property really hard killing 75% of the herd. While checking trail cameras this was on of the only buck in the area who survived the outbreak. He didn't pay attention to the farm for the next couple years while the herd recovered but every time he checked cameras this buck showed up. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, podcast Dan shares the story of harvesting his biggest buck to date and the amazing blood tracking adventure that followed. Even though the shot was back and did not instantly kill the buck, Dan's persistence paid off during the 2 day track job. The blood trail disappeared when heavy rain moved in and Dan was forced to grind search until dark. On a last ditch effort, Dan and a family friend went back to grind search the remainder of the farm. After grinding the first of the remaining ridges, the guys decided to head back down to where they found last blood. The guys discuss how Byron went about locating this particular piece of public ground, scouting it, and eventually hunting it. Have you ever lost a piece of hunting property, not knowing where you were going to hunt the upcoming fall? With a little help from a friend he was able to gain access to a new farm.
